Dan O'Dowd's Ridiculous Mariners - Mets trade proposal

Rob Kajiwara - baseball - Seattle Mariners - Robinson Cano

Dan O'Dowd, a former MLB general manager and current analyst for MLB Network, proposed a trade between the Mets and Mariners:

The trade is being heralded by Mets fans, while being scorned by Mariners fans, including myself.

While the trade was concocted entirely by unreliable sources and has no actual potential of happening in a manner similar to what O'Dowd has proposed, it is still garnering a lot of attention, since baseball fans love trade talk.

Mets fans are wishing and hoping the trade comes true, while Mariners fans know that, in spite of however inept of an organization the Mariners might be, they would still never do something as stupid as this trade. Mets fans seem to think that the Mariners are desperate to dump Cano's salary, which is not the case. Cano still delivers All Star quality production, and in spite of his large salary, is a productive player. What the Mariners are really interested in is, since they are now starting a rebuild, the potential of moving Cano in exchange for a young prospect who might contribute in the future. Cano is a good player to have for a contending team, but with the Mariners choosing to rebuild instead of contend, probably until 2021, having aging veterans on the roster doesn't make sense. Nevertheless, the Mariners are not going to give Cano away for free, nor are they going to do something as ridiculous as doing a one-sided trade simply to get rid of Cano. Cano, despite his 80-game steroid suspension last year, is still a boost to the Mariners organization, a fan-favorite, and a productive player.

The aggravating part of this whole thing is how insistent Mets fans are in believing that this is a realistic and good trade for the Mariners, in spite of Mariners fans telling them otherwise.

I really wish Dan O'Dowd would come up with a more realistic, less one-sided trade idea, even if it is only hypothetical. He's really only looking at this from the Mets point of view, while totally misunderstanding what the Mariners are trying to do.
